3 Stars Delorme PN40
The battery life is very dissapointing. The screen is too small. The Maps that are loaded on the computer are very difficult to use. If you do not have an large supply of battery’s to carry with you or you are unable to plug this unit in pass on it.

5 Stars Serious Tool = Serious Fun
This is the first GPSr I have ever owned. After two months of research, forum lurking, and question asking, I finally bought this one. I was a bit worried because I had heard this unit has a steep learning curve. Well I have had it for a week now and all I can say is that I LOVE IT. I was able to find geocaches, download and install aerial imagery, create maps with waypoints, markers, property lines, routes, etc without reading the user manual. If you have any common sense with regard to operating electronic devices like cell phones, ipods, etc.. you will find this unit very easy to use. If your thinking of getting one, do it! You will love it. This is one serious tool that can provide a lot of serious fun!

5 Stars DeLorme Earthmate PN-40
I have owned two other top of the line GPS units and used several others prior to purchasing the PN-40. This is by far the best GPS I have seen. It does take some time to learn how to download and import the maps but it is time well spent. Delorme’s website and forum is full usefull information. You can’t be the one year subscription for $29.

4 Stars Great potential, almost there
I bought the DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 as an upgrade to my Magellan eXplorist 500. I considered buying a Garmin product but liked the $[...] “all you can eat option” map download of the DeLorme Earthmates as compared to the Garmin map prices. I found it significantly less expensive than say a Garmin Oregon 400t by the time one adds topo and autorouting maps. I wanted a GPSr primarily for geocaching but wanted it do be able to do simple auto-routing as well to get to cache sites.

I’ve had the PN-40 for about a month and am very pleased with it. I recently spent four hours in the woods tracking down geocaches and was very pleased with the performance.

I’m running the 2.5beta firmware which adds much beter geocaching support and I’ve taken advantage of www.geocaching.com’s “Send to GPS” to send geocaches descriptions and logs to the unit. DeLorme has said that they are planning a Cache Register application that will do bulk upload of GPS files without having to pass them first through their Topo7 mapping software. In the meantime there are some hacks available on the DeLorme forums that accomplish something similar.

Pros:

- seems very accurate

- black and white aerial, color aerial and topo maps are great. Seeing the aerial can help in the woods if you’re looking for open areas to reduce bushwhacking.

- crisp screen

- good compass

- easy menu navigation

- amazingly responsive support from DeLorme. DeLorme employees seem very engaged and solicit and incorporate customer suggestions in new firmware releases.

- good price, especially if you factor in the unlimited map downloads for $[...] for a year.

- text entry is much easier than with my eXplorist.

- buttons very usable even with gloves on

- quick satellite acquisition and ephemeris prediction with 2.5b firmware.

Cons:

- battery life could be improved, although I carry extra NiMH AAs with me. I got 5 hours from some Eneloops in very cold conditions. There are starting to be other longer lasting rechargeable Li-on battery options as well although I have not tried them yet.

- a little bit bigger than my eXplorist 500 although it still fits easily in a jacket pocket…but the orange color makes it harder to pretend that I’m talking on a cell phone if I’m next to a cache and muggles are around.

- Passing GPX files through Topo7 requires an extra step and there are limits on the size of the geocache and logs being passed through Topo7 (although the “Send to GPS” support has addressed this for single caches and the Cache Register looks like it will address this for bulk cache loads).

- Auto-routing goes to a block of addresses rather than a specific one. Not an issue for me since I’m not using it as a dedicated auto-routing GPSr but might be for some.

- I don’t get a WAAS lock all the time at my latitude but it doesn’t seem to affect the accuracy of the unit at all, so this isn’t really a negative, but it might make you feel embarrassed if your friends all have WAAS lock (or their GPSr are claiming WAAS lock).

Overall I think it is a great unit and it is getting better with new enhancements coming down the pike from DeLorme.

4 Stars Delorme PN 40
This is a great product! Its very easy to use, and the color sat. imagery is fantastic. TWO THUMBS UP!!!!!!

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Not for travel alone
Streets and Trips with the GPS gives much more information than small portable GPS units but the complexity requires it be turned over to a passanger use it safely. To reward the passanger/navagator they can watch a DVD during those long interstate streches, while streets and trips runs in the background.

2 Stars There are better programs out there…pass on this one.
I needed a good GPS program that would be up-to-date with it’s maps and could replace my fond memories of my StreetPilot 2610 from years past. What I got was a mix of good and bad.

The Pros: Accurate maps (for my area). Large readout of speed. Good routing choices

The Cons: Plenty. Robotic voice (unbelieveable considering $99 standalone units have a decent voice). No automatic switching from day-to-night maps. The maps can be crooked in comparison to the screen (now why is that???) when driving in navigation or direction mode. Bland map color. Quick info (time to destination, elevation, etc) missing or in small sizes…making it impossible to glance at your screen to see the info while driving. Scaling of maps are lacking certain sizes. Icons that are virtually worthless…the commands can be left in the menu listings.

Overall, this product is severely lacking for the buyer who is interested in a user-friendly GPS program. Being out on the market for several years, Microsoft has some sub-standard engineers overseeing this project. All they have to do is look at their competition and see what they need to do to make theirs better.

Like I said in my title: There are better ones out there…go do your research on them and buy a better quality product.

5 Stars Microsoft Streets & Trips 2009
I have had this program for abouy a month. In my opinion it is as good as n-route by Garmen ( my prior program) I was pleased with my old one but it got wiped during a stint in the shop and I couldn’t find my disc to reload so I shopped around and found Microsoft for half th price of my old one.It works great. I am very pleased.

2 Stars needs hwy number updates
not what i would expect from Microsoft, used the gps in town, location was 4 blocks further than gps said ,it uses old hwy numbers, typed in address in Louisiana that I pick up trailers, pulls up Port Allen,La. There is no hwy 165 there.Uses shortest route, even if practical is faster,no way to change settings to avoid, unless I just can;t find in menu..overall,not finding good adresses and/or coming up blocks short, makes having this product rather useless…it is easy to use though…have an issue with the install….states registry settings were not installed correctly…had to go to program files..open software there, create shortcut…then open as administrator…can’t use by just simply clicking on like normal, over all,not worth the headache of just trying to figure out how to even open to use..then to find out,I’m reading hwy numbers that were retired years ago. Also, cannot get software updates, have to purshase the next release, over all, very dissapointed in this softwares outdated info and not finding known addresses…but it will get you close, you can ask for better directions when you get the city limits…lol

5 Stars Great Navigator
I purchased this program with GPS recently to use with my laptop as a navigator on road trips. I have used it on a couple short trips so far, and it works great. Getting ready to use it on a long, 7,000+ mile road trip. Easy to use, easy to change course for side trips. I like the display of all restaurants and motels at any given spot. Great price – approximately $50. I saw this same product at Office Depot for $75. I like it better than a Garmin GPS I purchased a couple years ago for $500.
